Paper or plastic?

I got up this morning and went to pack my lunch. I looked for the brown bag that I used yesterday. Never ever have I done that-- reused my brown paper lunch bag-- but I figured that it was clean having only housed a couple 100 calorie packs and a yogurt the day before. Oh and a tea bag. But since I would have to go back to my room for said bag, I thought, "What are the bags like 50 for $2??? Use a new one!" So I pulled a fresh one from the drawer and packed my lunch.

On my way out the door, I looked up over the kitchen sink and there it was. A gallon size ziplock bag that had been washed out and was now drying on the rack with the dish towels. Never have I seen my mother do that before, but there it was-- the reuseable plastic bag that was not supposed to be reusable.

What a glimpse into the future. Today I promised myself that I will not collect squares of foil for reuse or ask people if they are done with their plastic forks because "a hot wash will make them good as new again!"

On the same note, have you heard about these bags called "I am not a Plastic Bag"? They are selling out all over the world as a statement to use it as a grocery bag. It's very "green" which is in these days. They look plain and are made of material:

I'm make my own statement bag, not buy a commercial one. It will probably say "Don't let me buy ice cream."

My mom always kept gently used tin foil and never threw away a sandwich bag. I alway said I'd never do that, but...

Oh yes, our mother always washes out zip-lock bags.
As the keeper of my own home, I've found myself doing similar conserving methods. I just havne't figured out whether it is thrifty, frugal, or just plain cheap to do such a thing.

Hi!! Thanks for the blog comment today. I'm totally bummed to say I don't remember the hangout out at the Friesen reunion so many years ago, but I have a terrible memory so don't doubt that it happened ;) You are so beautiful and it was SO fun to get your comment! How funny that we have cousins strewn all over the country and we don't even know it ;)
